Learn how the field of science is finally recognizing the Earth as one complex, life-sustaining system. Within that paradigm, questions of ‘right action’ and ethical behaviour flounder against a backdrop of silence.

Stephan Harding guides readers on a multi-scaled, deep time tour with the objective of developing their Gaia sense, as well as the appreciation of Gaia needed for the realization of any hope of maintaining human habitability and long-term sustainability here. I imagine their bellies touching the “black mayonnaise” sludge of accumulated waste that lies at the bottom.

I wanted to stay there for as long as it took my bodymind to learn how to be with and not on top of this place. Ki had spoken to the person on whom rested the next step of visually communicating this work to the world, had even guided Brian in how to visually describe ki-self! In one of the interviews, performance artist Marina Abramovic describes how, in ‘Nightsea Crossing-Conjunction’ she and her artistic collaborator, Ulay, invited a Tibetan lama and an Aboriginal medicine man to sit around a table, motionless, looking at each other for four days, four hours each day. I look out over a logged stand right before the barricade where a pair of isolated giants—names as yet unknown to me—stand bereft and gaping open over what once was. Animate Earth argues that we need to establish a right relationship with the planet as a living entity in which we are indissolubly embedded - and to which, in the final analysis, we are all accountable.

Walk on a fire line, ache on the body line, an imprint of the gash that is a logging road disguised. While it might push the animism angle a bit too hard for some tastes (and I'm sure more than a few people will be put off by the book's constant poetic reference to the earth/gaia as "She"), overall it was really just a benign exploration of the Gaia Theory (which I hadn't realised is so controversial), starting with the history of how the theory was developed, and then looking at all the various networks that the earth uses to regulate itself. Animate Earth argues that we need to establish a right relationship with the planet as a living entity in which we are indissolubly embedded-and to which, in the final analysis, we are all accountable. And so it was perfectly terrible timing that I was reading this just as Australia has scrapped its carbon tax. Later on, when she and Ulay extended the piece, they both sat together completely silent and motionless, for seven hours a day. Stephan's work is based on careful integration of rational scientific analysis with our intuition, sensing and feeling - a vitally important task at this time of severe ecological and climate crisis.

A fear that we had installed a large artwork on top of brutalized land for the sake of some compelling photographs without the land’s consent gripped me. Buddhism is a sublime vehicle for teaching us certain truths; for refining awareness, training the mind and cultivating the wisdom of altruism and compassion. The competitive art world may think of itself as a community, but it rewards personal expression, individual achievement, and wall-to-wall networking. Featuring leading scientists, ecologists and authors, Animate Earth makes the case for a new holistic scientific revolution as an essential step towards solving the environmental crises created in large part by conventional science’s mechanistic view of the earth. To hold this awareness felt like attempting to hold a greased rubber chicken: a state of constant slippage.Learn how the field of science is finally recognising the Earth as one complex, life-sustaining system. His monastic training, however, had carved away his ego-driven self, so he chose to begin his artistic work with homeless men in a homeless shelter, where he could function with humility and true social immersion. Stephan replaces the cold, objectifying language of science with a way of speaking of our planet as a sentient, living being rather than as a dead, inert mechanism. These are my heartbeat-funnies, who always remind me of the clashing contradiction and gift that is my life.
