I wish we could all just dispense with the cries of "emo" and condemnation of Corax and Gav Thorpe's vision for him. After a tense and slow few weeks trying to escape the Isstvan system in Branne's stealthed ship Avenger Corax splits up the survivors, sending two ships back to Deliverance while continuing with one ship to Terra. The 18th installment of the Horus Heresy, dedicated to the 19th legion (really dropped the ball on that one) is a pleasant enough read with a minimum of tension built up. Kenntnisse von 'Mechanicum' und des Hörbuches 'Raven's Flight' sind nützlich, aber nicht unentbehrlich.

The Alpha legionaries undercover in the Raven Guard disrupt the rebuilding process and damage the gene-tech Corax had uncovered. This book made me think about my own loses in my life and how others have reacted and how I have dealt with it.This may be Gav Thorpe's first Horus Heresy novel but he successfully brings his years of experience with other Black Library franchises to bear on what seems, at first glance, to be a side-story in the epic's history. Die Verluste sind so schwerwiegend dass die Raven Guard nicht mehr effektiv gegen Horus und seine Verbündeten vorgehen kann. Piling up erratic behavior through the Alpha Legionaries and certain characters and ramping up the tension of the infiltration, he provided a magnificent red herring for readers to follow. Only one thing really bothered me here: For being a primarch that supposedly has exceptional patience (which one has to have to wage the type of war that the Raven Guard excel at), Corax seemed to be overly impetuous and prone to sudden outbursts.

This entry had all of those things - it even had a brief encounter with the Emperor, which is always exciting (so long as they keep them brief)! It's a well traveled tale, starting in Istvaan, moving to Terra and finally to the Raven Guard's world of Deliverance. However, I personally don't think he's overly reflective about why things go wrong for him, for the story ends with him committing to an attack that he originally planned to undertake with far more of his Legion. Band der 'Horus Heresy' Reihe, und konzentriert sich auf die Nachwirkungen des Istvaan V Massakers auf das Imperium. The book bets heavily on exploring Corax's character and the effects of the Dropsite Massacre on the Raven Guard. He keeps making demands of the apothecary and magos working on the gene-tech that are unreasonable and too much, too quickly, and when Branne confronts him about the rash, overzealous nature of the first batches of Raptors, Corax gets significantly angry and shrugs it all off - instead of listening to the sound advice of his senior staff, he wants to expand the recruitment instead of doing a thorough job, to hit some arbitrary goals he set for his Legion.
