The illustrations in this fantasy book are simply beautiful, so it's a shame I couldn't connect with the story more. This review was written by Kelly Ashley With over 20 years of education experience in both the US and the UK, Kelly Ashley currently works as an independent consultant, providing training and support for primary schools across the UK. Harklights is an orphanage and factory run by Old Ma Bogey and the children pack matchboxes in the factory. What a mighty message from so many delicately made moments in our amazing Children's Book of the month for May.

He works as a freelance illustrator for editorial and design clients and teaches children's book illustration at City Lit in London. The themes of nature, conservation and family weave effortlessly through the novel, with stunning illustrations to bring this organic adventure to life. Overall, “Harklights” provides a feel-good story that would appeal to adults and children alike with relatable characters and meaningful moments. He is worried about how he's going to keep the baby a secret from Old Ma Bogey and decides to confide in Petal. During one performance, The Hobbs and fairies convince Old Ma Bogey to release them from their cage. He is always watchful of the world around him and loves collecting and drawing beautiful snapshots of nature, relishing the small things people often miss.

The story seems somewhat steeped in darkness, cruelty and the grimness of an era we would rather forget, until we are intrigued by the miniature man that Old Ma Bogey keeps in a glass dome on her desk. Harklights suffers from being a lite version of this better book, but it's not the only book it draws on.I thoroughly enjoyed going on this adventure with Wick and was captivated by the descriptions of the forest and the Hobs. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. Like By Ash, Oak and Thorn, Harklights is a meaningful story of love, family, nature and possibilities.

He underlines the notion that we should be stewards of nature, not its masters, but he also entertains, not least in the distinctive monochrome illustrations and map he himself has created for the publication.

How will he find a way to protect his new friends and the forest from the mysterious and foreboding danger that looms ever closer? Winner of the Joan Aiken Future Classics Prize, Harklights is a magical story celebrating family, friendship and the natural world, filled with a message of hope for our times. Harklights by Tim Tilley is a heartwarming Middle Grade read with an environmental message that goes straight to the readers' hearts. Run by the cruel and wicked Old Ma Bogey it is a terrible place of suffering for all the children who live there.
