When you need to check your horse’s heart rate quickly and easily, Polar Equine Healthcheck provides the most optimal solution. As in humans, pain can cause an increased heart rate, this means that if your horse has a movement issue it will also likely cause an increase in their heart rate. By monitoring a horse’s physiological response to exercise, heart rate monitors help to find a balance in training regimens that promote readiness for competition while protecting the horse’s health. Large variations in your horse’s heart rate during light exercise can suggest the presence of arrhythmias. The aim of this study was to determine whether the HRM can determine HRV accurately in horses during groundwork.

Add and save all your Horses details, download data from your Horsepal sensors for analysis and rug selection advice or start Horsepal before an activity so you can track your favourite performance stats and afterwards, dive deep into your data.

This kit has specially designed pigtail lead wires that are made exclusively for V-MAX which are used to adapt the Garmin Premium Heart Rate Monitor (used by the human) to pick up your horses heart rate.

The horse opens the mouth, thereby shortly extending and retracting the tongue (including licking the lips) ( 35– 37). Using heart rate data allows trainers to adjust a horse’s training regimen, intensity, and duration to optimize performance while preventing injuries and protecting horse welfare. Fit horses exhibit lower heart rates during high-intensity work, enabling them to sustain exercise for durations periods. HRV is a parameter that can be measured non-invasively in horses and, if it could be applied in practice easily, this could be a useful parameter for monitoring stress in horses.

The heart rate monitor calculates the horse’s heart rate in beats per minute (BPM) by measuring the time intervals between these heartbeats.

Furthermore, stress in horses may also lead to stress-related behaviors such as flight responses which may be dangerous to the human leading the horses during groundwork exercises. The Bland-Altman plot for the mean heart rate in beats per minute during baseline measurement, with the difference between sampling methods ( y-axis) plotted against the mean of the two methods ( x-axis). A moderate positive correlation was found between mean HR and whites of the eyes shown ( df = 27, r = 0. The Animal Welfare Body did an internal ethical review and concluded that the study did not warrant a license under the Dutch law, and it was approved by them. A heart rate monitor is the best way of monitoring the health, recovery time, effort and efficiency of horses when training and recovering from races. No invasive procedures were performed and the horses performed activities that were part of their normal training routines at the stable.
