The world of L Word disavows the old flawed cliche that lesbians are anti-men – they are just not that interested in them. Rather than isolating certain scenes for their lesbian subtext or their resistance to a contemporary pathologized lesbian reading, I argue that the sexual intelligibility of such scenes is inseparable from the kinetic aesthetics of the flapper that Arzner harnesses to organisze the film's visual schema. Lise Weil : The most obvious affinity between our books is that they’re centered in the same culture/movement but in different countries. Yet, the lack of any US lesbian-centred drama with the partial exception of Orange is the New Black is, Chaiken has argued, the reason behind the decision to bring the show back.

Among its many accolades, The Handmaiden was in competition for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, and won the 2018 BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language. Commercials advising us to shave our pubes and perfume them are actually telling us that our vaginas are a little icky and need to be pretty and sweet-smelling before they get touched. The L Word was the first mainstream series to place lesbians centre stage – it was the first to feature a lesbian couple who conceive a child through insemination and it was the first to attempt a broadly sympathetic portrayal of transgender experience in a sustained way.Sometimes intensely sexual, other times subtly romantic, this emotion is always incredibly powerful.

Expanding the film's generic antecedents to consider the flapper as a discursive figure of 1920s American culture, I situate The Wild Party within developing modern female kinaesthetics and spectatorships, during a period in which Hollywood was also systematizing its commodification of femininity and the production of heterosexual romance narratives. Touching upon this “sext” may partially sate my lesbian Desire to know an/other in words, may site a transmaterial zone open to my interpretation.

How would it address key cultural shifts such as the parallel rise in gender fluid identities and increased trans visibility and the new religious right with their feet under the table at the White House?

Queer love has come a long way; what was once used as a sexual slur is now a buzzword for LGBTQ+ Pride. However, when questioned about the film’s lingering sex scenes and a male gaze, Waters, defends the film as, “although it portrays women trapped by male structures and trapped within the limits of male-authored text, it ‘shows them escaping from those things or using them, using bits of them for their own pleasure”. You can have a drawer full of the hottest dildos on the planet, but the place where your orgasm starts—even if it’s not the only place it finishes—is right there. The Handmaiden is a Victorian tale of love and deception transplanted in 1930s Korea under Japanese colonial rule.Upon assuming roles of painter and model, their relationship takes on a formal structure that counterintuitively supports more intimacy and flirtation. What the ads don’t say, as they show women splayed across their beds fully satisfied by mind-blowing orgasms, is that she needs more than a few quick thrusts of his penis. Weil : Well yes, because one of the things we began to understand was that our bodies needed to enter thought; Adrienne Rich at the end of Of Woman Born wrote about “learning to think through the body. I found only one book that remembered, step-by-step, women’s new thinking and it was a French book: Cathy Bernheim’s Perturbation, My Soeur. They – and, vicariously, we – enjoy the spoils and spaces of their wealth: desirable homes, trendy cafes, quality restaurants, art galleries, designer clothes and cars, and time for affairs and intrigues.

I have already argued that I perceive lesbian Desire as an inter/active mode which mediates two synonymous but operatively distinct, performative terms of relation, the lesbian Subject and the lesbian Other/Self. This is a lot unlike the male guests who hid their perverted and pernicious desires underneath their formal attire. The queer celebration of privilege and desire was one of the reasons behind the success of the show for a community that was either invisible or marginalised. The L Word presented a series of representational firsts that other television series such as Orange is the New Black and Sense8 have built on. Whilst placing the sapphic gaze at the centre of the narrative, the following two foreign-language films are historical period dramas that subvert genre conventions by portraying a queer feminist love story and a female saviour trope rescuing upper class heroines from their patriarchal shackles.
