Description

The concept was based on the German Air Ministry's purchase of the Lockheed F-104G Starfighter, which was eventually nicknamed Widowmaker by Luftwaffe pilots. In German service these planes had a poor safety record, with 262 out of 916 Luftwaffe Starfighters lost in accidents during the aircraft's time in service, which lasted from the early 1960s until the mid-1980s. The vinyl release of Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters includes a 4 booklet with extensive liner notes. Rhythm section Lemmy and Simon King are present throughout, Lemmy's contribution can not be understated, hiss trademark rhythm bass ties the whole sound together magnificently.

Former Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey revives the Psychedelic Warlords, including frontman Craig High, keyboardist Zoie Green and guitarist Simon Wilkins, for an acid trip down memory lane on this spectacular live recording! Robert Calvert, a longtime member and lyricist of space pioneers Hawkwind, crafted this record, inspired by the Lockheed bribery scandals.Apart from Brian Eno on synth, the other musicians are all pretty much Hawkwind members, even Dave Brock plays lead guitar on one track.

The storyline of the record is political and related to the time when album was written, focusing to a case when German government bought jet fighters from the America. variant ("G for Germany") kept crashing in flames in droves killing young German pilots in the process! The spoken word interludes reinforce the absurdity of the whole situation (featuring the loony Viv Stanshall) and inject a satirical wit missing from the more standard-based songs that are written from the perspective of the pilot, who, in the end must begrudgingly concede that “the radar screen’s projection/tells me I’m too late.
