Description

One of my all time favourite travel books, Theroux takes his jaded eyes around the coast of Thatcher's Britain at the time of the Falklands conflict. this has always been my favorite of Robert Westall's books, but I didn't appreciate it in as much *wholeness*, reading on and off and knowing what was coming, as I did the first time I read it.

Numb and disoriented, he evades the authorities and makes his way to the beach, where he is befriended by Don, a stray dog. Apparently it was common practice for people, on this train, to throw their finished newspapers out of the window as there would be somebody along the line to pick them up and read them. Anxious that he will be sent to live with his fussy Cousin Elsie he goes on the run across the war-battered land of North East England, his only friend in his journey a stray dog that he meets on the beach. Joining eccentric Joseph Keilty by the sea, Harry learns to scavenge along the beach and makes friends with some nearby soldiers, until once more he is driven on alone. When a bomb during an air raid destroys Harry’s home and kills his family, he knows that he is all alone in the world and has only himself to rely on. The grandfather said, "Aah used to reckon they were mad, leaving the door unlocked when they weren't here, and that notice on the table. There are some wonderful moments that struck notes with me -- for instance an encounter with Jonathan Rabin, who told me once during a signing event that he and Theroux were friends and often shared galleys before final publication. He's scathing, ironic, judgemental without spelling the judgements out and very, very choosy about the human creations too.
